A common obstacle many creatives face is knowing when their piece is done, for fear of overworking it.

For this call we defined that stopping point for artists: 60 marks.

Whether you work in 2D or 3D, this open call for entries dictated that the piece must be finished in 60 motions or less - stitches in fabric, brush marks on canvas or paper, lines in a drawing, etc.

Many artists would consider a creation limited in this way a warm-up, or sketch, however it is during the sketch that some of the most important information about a piece is communicated to both the viewer and the artist themselves - the moment when an idea is tangibly manifested into visual art.

We requested brevity for the sake of refining intention.

How much can the artist say in 60 marks?

Hương Ngô: Ungrafting

Time is crucial to Hương Ngô, who investigates the resonances of colonial histories in the present day.

She explores various aspects of Vietnamese resistance to French colonialism through archival research, and activates the historical record via imagery, language, and material matter.

For her first solo exhibition in Colorado, Ngô turns to a series of early twentieth-century photographs showing foreign trees and tree grafts planted in Vietnam by the French.

For the artist, grafting—a procedure that involves cutting and splicing different species into a single plant—serves as a powerful metaphor for the physical violence inherent in colonialism.

Ngô reproduces the archival photographs using the Van Dyke method, which was common at the time the original pictures were made, but alters the fixing process so that the new images will gradually deteriorate and darken.

Accompanying the photographs are other new works by Ngô: altered reproductions of plants that were catalogued in 1919 for a French herbarium (a collection of systematically organized dried plants) and hanging fabric works with visible sutures that are treated with iron, copper, and other materials, many of which carry particular significance in the Southwest region of the United States.

Like tree grafts, the tears in these works serve as a reminder of the violence of agricultural and mineral extraction; control of land, the artist proposes, is often accompanied by control over the land’s inhabitants.

At the same time, the mends make visible the resistance and repair that may emerge in response to such violence.

To expand on this idea, the artist will bring into the exhibition a selection of cultural heritage items from our Fine Arts Center’s permanent collection that further speak to the history of the region and its cultural intersections.

Collectively, the works in the show offer a gesture of what the artist has termed “ungrafting”: a poetic decolonial methodology that weaves together networks of care across time.

Hương Ngô: Ungrafting is curated by Katja Rivera, Curator of Contemporary Art, in collaboration with the artist. Support of the exhibition is generously provided by The Anschutz Foundation and Colorado Creative Industries.

Over the course of his career, Clarence Shivers (1923-2007) demonstrated a commitment to artistic experimentation, working across different media—both two- and three-dimensional—and cultivating a range of stylistic approaches.

A Tuskegee Airman—and career military person—one of Shivers’ most celebrated works is his statue dedicated to these pilots and their legacies, located at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Joining this highly selective as well as segregated group of aviators shaped the artist’s commitment to celebrating Black experience and creativity in his work.

Shivers often returned to forms of portraiture. Whether images of friends, families, musicians, civil rights leader, or others, Shivers represented his subjects with poignant and expressive insight.

Not bound by convention, Clarence Shivers also created abstract works that demonstrate his ongoing exploration into geometric form, color, and movement.

Clarence Shivers: Experimenting with Form presents over 30 works, paintings, prints, and sculpture, that offer an expansive view of the artist’s prolific career.

Clarence Shivers: Experimenting with Form is curated by Michael Christiano, Director of Visual Arts & Museum. The exhibition is generously supported by The Anschutz Foundation.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:

Modernism proposed that painting/sculpture could be much more than a relatively simple reproduction of visual appearances.

This concept resonates with Aristotle’s theory about the importance in understanding the true purpose of artistic expression.

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance”.

Henri Matisse’s assertion echoes this sentiment: “In the beginning you must subject yourself to the influence of nature. You must be able to walk firmly on the ground before you start walking on a tightrope”.

As early as 1908, Western painting freed itself from the desire to represent visual appearances with Cubism, breaking the boundaries between figuration and abstraction.

Finally in the late 1940’s the last chains fell off of an aesthetic composition dating at least from the Renaissance.

My interest in languages and the etymology of words, made me curious to know the origin of kanji.

I have found books about these Chinese signs called Oracle Bone script/ Dragon script, that were part of an ancient writing system lost in time, and rediscovered 3000 years later around 1895.

These primordial symbols connect us with the past, and are a visceral connection part of the collective memory.

To me, they have a lyrical quality belonging to my Japanese roots and it’s the reason why I incorporate them to my visual vocabulary.

A work of art without substance and reasoning is only an empty vessel, like a body without a soul.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Gaby Oshiro painter/musician was born in Buenos Aires Argentina to Edvige Bresolin, a photographer and pianist, and Oscar Takashi Oshiro, a political activist and lawyer, who was desaparecido (kidnapped and murdered) for opposing the military dictatorship in Argentina.

When it became clear her father would not return alive, Gaby emigrated to Italy along with her mother and brother, where she studied for 5 years at the Liceo Artistico Statale di Treviso.

After fine arts school in Italy, she attended Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes Ernesto de la Cárcova in Argentina where she studied with Guggenheim fellow Carlos Gorriarena.

In 2016 Gaby collaborated with writer/journalist Andrés Asato on his book about the 17 Desaparecidos of Japanese descent (Nikkei), helping him write the chapter about her father entitled "Con Alma Tanguera.”

Following the publication of the book, she was invited to do an art installation called Kintsugi about the 17 desaparecidos Nikkei at the Espacio Cultural of the National Library of Congress in Argentina.

Kintsugi, the Presence of your Absence-Part II, was presented at the Galleria dell'Artistico in Treviso Italy, and at the CMA Centro Municipal de Arte in Buenos Aires.

Gaby has received multiple awards and accolades for her work to include being a finalist for the prestigious Bienal Sur 2017 and the Artisan Series Bombay Sapphire Prize.

After working on portraiture for many years, Gaby’s current work is exploring the use of Oracle Bone script (Japanese/Chinese ancient characters) as modules inspired by the Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism guided by Robert Motherwell, Giuseppe Capogrossi and Carla Accardi.

Becca Day: The Edge of Ourselves

For this exhibit I explored themes of the edges of ourselves—our visible, corporeal edges and invisible, social-emotional edges.

At various times in life, we are soft or hard edged (and both simultaneously)—both can be useful for connection and protection. Both can work against us at times. No matter how much we try to control our edges we are permeable.

Calaya Amparo: A World of Manifestations

I find inspiration from the motion of gravity, falling water, the texture of rock faces and wide trees, horizon lines, motion of trees, the energy between two figures… I welcome viewers to see and feel whatever comes up when spending time with the work.

Melissa Porter: Side Show

Melissa’s work is reflective of her life experiences and showcases her affinity for symbolism.

Found treasures such as vintage clock cases, cigar boxes and photographs add their own character to the intimate story she narrates.

Through her creative process, Melissa explores the concepts of permanence, boundaries, value, and connection.

Michelle McMahan: Substrate

The word substrate is formed from the Latin prefix sub, which means “an underlying position,” plus the word stratu, which, in geology, means “each of the sedimentary layers of the earth.”

In philosophy, substrate refers to that which forms the essential part of being; that is, the foundation on which a person’s essence and attributes rest.

Sam Ken: The Art of Healing

This collection of work demonstrates how art has the power to heal, and is meant to give hope to those who may also be going through something, whether a physical injury, a difficult time, or anything in between.

Shared joy and shared pain are key elements to connecting with another human being.

Synopsis:
It's the height of Prohibition in 1920s Chicago, and a mob war's brewing between the South Side Gangsters and the Northern Chicago Mob Outfit.

The two ruthless crime leaders, Hal Sapone and Beanie O'Dannon, have finally agreed on bootlegging practices in Chicago and have decided to pull together resources for a collaborative effort with criminal endeavors.

On the surface, this strategy is similar to bailing out a sinking ship with tin cups.

Recently, gangsters from the north and south have been spotted together at various speakeasies throughout Chicago, but the tension in the air is always thick enough to be cut with a knife.

However, this newfound relationship between the opposing mob bosses has served, thus far, to inhibit gratuitous bloodshed as in the past.

Part of the success of this truce is that both crime bosses have found new dames, thereby intertwining more mutual relationships between the two factions.

The two gangs have set an official date to meet at Hal Sapone's Grand Gatsby Speakeasy to resolve all remaining differences.

Will these two underground organizations resolve their disputes, or will a massive melee rekindle the fatal flames between them?

This is where your story begins.

Seats are limited, reserve online.
